| The EMMAN network is built around 8 nodes housed at the member sites. Each node contains one or more routers to which the institutions in the locality are connected via wide area communications links.
The nodes are interlinked by dedicated fibre optic links wherever possible running ethernet at 1 Gigabit per second, and high speed managed links in other places at various speeds from 8 to 155 Megabits per second. Full resilience is maintained with each node having at least two links to the other nodes. The links connecting institutions to EMMAN are rented from local carriers, primarily BT and ntl, and a variety of speeds are in operation ranging from 2Mbps up to 100Mbps. The network operates as a routed IP backbone with connection to the SuperJANET 4 high speed academic network at the node located at the University of Nottingham. |
